Some Mid-October Prayer Requests

IMG_1629-Please pray for us as we are in the thick of hot season in Zambia, with temperatures well into the 90s every day. This time of year is always challenging with such hot, dry, and dusty days before the rains start. Hopefully, in late October or early November, rain will be here.

-Please continue to pray for Zambia, as the entire country is still on 8-hour/day power outages due to low rainfall. Although, strangely enough, our power has improved a little bit this past week, and we even had one day where the power was on for a full 24 hours! 93% of Zambia’s power is generated by hydroelectric power. When there’s not enough rain, there’s no power. Tanzania, which borders Zambia, just shut down all of their hydroelectric power due to not enough water.

-After a slow start to the CROSS Project HIV/AIDS Ministry this term, we are praising God for three churches that have signed up! For those that are familiar with the Lusaka area, we have a teaching locations in Garden Compound, George Compound, and in the Kasupe area near Ciyanjano. All three churches are on Lesson 2 (out of 16) this week.

IMG_1617One of the churches we are teaching at this term.

PRAY that God would work mightily in hearts, minds, and actions, as people think and pray about how should they respond to, as Christians, and glorify God in HIV/AIDS and domestic abuse in their lives, their families’ lives, churches, and communities.

-Please PRAY for John and Eta (our two national workers in the CROSS Project), as they do the bulk of the teaching at our new churches for CROSS to teach at this term (September – December).

-Please pray for Sam, as he’s been struggling with some stomach and digestive bugs for the last couple weeks. He’s still energetic and happy but just can’t seem to shake this little bug.

-We PRAISE God for two happy and healthy little boys, who keep us on our toes. Please PRAY for them and for us as we seek to parent them in a way that is honoring and glorifying to God. We, as parents, need a lot of wisdom and guidance, and please PRAY that God would give these two boys soft hearts to him and his Word.

-Please continue to pray for Jason and Grace Van Ankum, as they are now back in North America this Fall raising more support and connecting with current supporters. They hope to be back with us here in Zambia by the first of the year. You can find more about them here.

-Please PRAY that God would give Derek wisdom and supernatural guidance as he continues to settles into this new role as Country Director and seeks to lead this field.

-Pray that the ACTION Zambia Team would put on compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another, love, and peace. And pray that the Word of Christ would dwell in us richly. (Col. 3:12-17)

-We would really appreciate broad, general (Pauline-type) prayers for our entire ACTION Zambia Team as well as their ministries – Ciyanjano, PLD/APC, CROSS Project, Bible Clubs, and Feeding Programs

Our Latest Prayer Requests

IMG_3762Thank you so much for praying for us as a family and for our ministry (The CROSS Project) as we have been back in the States now for almost a month and a half!

We PRAISE God for a wonderful and encouraging time with family, friends, and supporters as we traveled around the midwest (WI, MI, IN, KY) in September and shared about our ministry and what God is doing in Zambia. Now we are back in the Minneapolis area and are hanging out with friends and family here and waiting for this baby to arrive.

-Please pray for Kristin and baby boy #2 as we are getting very close, Lord willing, to this little guy arriving! Kristin is technically due on the 27th of October, but we are praying that he comes sooner (see why in the next prayer item)! Please pray for a safe delivery and a healthy baby and mom.

-Please pray for me (Derek), as I will need to make an unexpected trip back to Zambia from November 4-14. There will be more on why this is happening later, but it’s nothing bad. We all head back to Zambia from this Home Assignment as a family on January 14th.

-We are praying for additional monthly prayer and financial partners for us personally. Please click here for giving options, if you feel so led to donate to the Dearths.

-Please pray for John and Eta (our two national workers in the CROSS Project), as they teach our new 4-week Domestic Abuse Lesson at two locations this Fall as well as teach the normal 16-week CROSS Project curriculum at one church this Fall and also get some well-deserved rest while we are here in the States.

-Pray that God would work mightily in hearts, minds, and actions as people think and pray about how should they respond as a Christian and glorify God in HIV/AIDS and domestic abuse in their lives, their families’ lives, churches, and communities.

-Pray that God would pour out His grace on the Zambian Church and that it would glorify God in how it relates to HIV/AIDS and domestic abuse.

-Pray for unity, endurance, hope, and joy in Jesus for the ACTION Zambia team and sweet times in the Word each day.

-We would really appreciate broad, general prayers for our entire ACTION Zambia Team as well as their ministries.

-Please continue to pray for more funds for CROSS, CROSS Graduation Bibles, and the George Feeding Program.

A Very Tragic Event to Witness Today [Graphic]

Below is an email prayer request that I sent out today to some of our prayer supporters, family, and friends. I also wanted to share it on here as well for your prayers, and also as a window into some of what goes on here in Zambia – some of which can be very dangerous and end very tragically. The picture below was not from the event today, but a picture that I took back in January of 2013 as I was waiting in my car to pick someone up.

You may not want to read the telling of the story, because it was a very disturbing event to witness. And if not, please just pray for the family of the man who was killed.

Hi Everyone,

We would really appreciate your prayers for the following situation that just unfolded in our backyard some 40 minutes ago. The power company here was installing a new power line pole to add support to the power lines directly behind our house and from where our power comes from. All morning, I was expecting our power to go off since they were attaching live wires into the new pole. But it never was turned off.

When Kristin looked outside after we had put Charlie down for a nap, she called for me to come. One of the power company workers was hanging from his feet upside down by his waist harness which was attached to the pole, and he was literally white as a ghost. It looks like what happened was the extension ladder that he was standing on was extended beyond where it was suppose to be and buckled. He probably instinctively reached out for anything he could to secure himself and grabbed the live wire and was electrocuted. To add to the horror of this scene, the waste harness grabbed a hold of his clothes and stripped him completely naked as he fell backward, and it took an unbelievably long amount of time for the other crew members to get up on the pole and get him down. Meanwhile, there is a naked dead man hanging upside down from the top of a power line pole in the middle of our neighborhood in full few of the tons of kids that live around here, which we could all hear talking around our back fence as this unfolded.

About 45 min ago, most of the crew sped off to the hospital with the man who had been electrocuted. The rest remain near our back fence and appear to be arguing back and forth. Please pray for this man’s family and friends, and pray that this would be a wakeup call to the power company to use proper equipment. It appears this was a very unnecessary death if the power would have just been turned off and better equipment used!

Charlie was down for a nap and didn’t see this all take place. But he was playing in the backyard most of the morning and did notice the same man working at the top of the pole.

Our Latest Prayer Requests

Thank you so much for praying for us as a family and for our ministry (The CROSS Project) here in Zambia. It’s been almost a year since I last updated the “Pray” tab of our blog! I hope to do better at updating this part of our blog in the future – because we really need your prayers! So, here are some things to fuel your prayer for us, the CROSS Project, and ACTION Zambia.

-Please pray for us (the Dearths) as we make preparations for our Home Assignment Sep 4th, 2014 – Jan 15th, 2015. We’ll be speaking at multiple churches around the Midwest and seeing friends and supporters as well.

-Please pray for wisdom and guidance as we finish up the CROSS Project Term 1 of 2014. The two churches that we are training right now have about a month to go before they graduate.

-Pray that God would work mightily in hearts, minds, and actions as people think and pray about how should they respond as a Christian and glorify God in HIV/AIDS and domestic abuse in their lives, their families lives, churches, and communities.

-Pray that we are able to find enough Nyanja Bibles for the graduates. Due to some poor planning, Zambia has run out of one of the main Zambian translations of the Bible (besides English), and the next printing may not be ready till this summer.

-Please continue to pray for strength, guidance, energy, and joy for Pastor John Chitambo and Counselor Eta Imasiku, our two national workers, as they minister alongside us in the CROSS Project and also provide for their families and serve in their churches.

-Please pray for CROSS (Derek, Kristin, John and Eta), as we help out in counseling and with some medical assistance at a local feeding program in George Compound for 100 HIV-positive children. It’s run by a local church and its pastor, Wozifera Ngoma, and his wife, Easter, who are also on staff with ACTION Zambia Ministries. -Pray for unity, endurance, hope, and joy in Jesus for the ACTION Zambia team and sweet times in the Word each day.

-We would really appreciate broad, general prayers for our entire ACTION Zambia Team as well as their ministries.
