There is something special about receiving letters or packages from “home.” Here are some ideas for things we like but can’t get in Zambia – just in case you wanted to send a care package. Updated: 5/8/2015
Coffee (we especially love Caribou – Mahogany, Peets – Mocha Java, Seattle’s Best, Starbucks – House Blend, and Cameron’s. Starbucks Via Blonde or Medium are great, too. We’ve also heard that Sam’s Club has a good deal on 40-oz. Kona/Member’s Mark. Whole bean is preferable, but we’ll take either!).
Crystal Light (gallon, 2-qt, 1-qt, or individual-sized packets – our favorites are any kind of lemonade or tea)
Hot Chocolate (Swiss Miss packets or something like that)
Snacks (granola bars – any kind, but we’ve grown to love Cliff bars!, snack packs, pretzels, fruit snacks, or any kid-friendly snacks, like Goldfish crackers, etc)
Popcorn (either Orville Redenbacher’s white popcorn kernels or microwave popcorn – Orville’s is our favorite, but we’ll take whatever!)
Flour or Corn Tortillas
Salsa (medium spicy)
Dressing or Marinade Packets (any kind of salad dressing packet, powder or liquid marinades for meat, dip mixes, enchilada sauce packets)
Green Chiles (those delectable little cans in the Mexican section)
Chipotles in Adobo Sauce (my newest cooking favorite!)
Mac n Cheese
Box Mixes (especially brownie mixes, but even white or yellow cake mixes, or muffin or pancake mixes, or…)
Dried Fruit (craisins, cherries, plums, apricots, mango, etc)
Lingonberries (Swedish Lingonberry Preserves…or something to that effect)
French’s Fried Onion Rings
Candy (dark chocolate or PB M&Ms, Reese’s PB Cups, Oreo’s, Hershey’s Nuggets – special dark with almonds or toffee and almonds, Twix, Butterfinger, anything with super dark chocolate, Coffee Rios from Trader Joes, Skittles, Sour Patch Kids, holiday candy, etc.)
Nuts (almonds for eating, pistachios for eating, cashews for eating, pecans or walnuts for baking)
Seasonal Foods (Hershey’s kisses, Oreos, candy canes, etc)
Your Favorite Recipe(s) and any special ingredients it calls for (e.g. Cream of Mushroom soup, quinoa, corn syrup, molasses, whole cranberries, etc)
Dry Black Beans
Children’s stuff – books, diapers (size 4-5 – even just a handful), Pedialyte powder packets, toys, etc.
Clothes, Socks, and Shoes for Charlie or Sam – our seasons are opposite. Charlie is wearing 3T clothes and size 9 shoes. Sam will be wearing 9-12 month clothes.

iTunes gift cards
Amazon/Kindle gift cards
Ziploc bags (any size, but especially sandwich, gallon, or snack-size)
Cookbooks – ethnic, homestyle, desserts, breakfasts, any kind!
Fun Yarn and knitting patterns!
Nice-smelling Lotion (Bath and Body Works – Japanese Cherry Blossom or Moonlight Path, etc)
Candles (nice-smelling ones!)
Pictures of Yourself for Our Fridge!
Here are some ways to get these things to us:
1. Bring it to us personally! We have a guest room and will welcome any guests.
2. Send it with someone else. You might know someone coming to visit Zambia, or we might know someone coming to visit. It is a lot cheaper to mail things within the US to someone going over than to mail it overseas.
3. Mail it. Our address is:ACTION International Ministries c/o Derek and Kristin Dearth P/B 230X Ridgeway Lusaka, Zambia
A few more tips:
- If possible, remove price tags and cellophane or other wrapping.
- Label items on custom label as “gifts” or “food items” or whatever. They tend to pass through customs better when listed more vaguely.
Feel free to email with any questions. And THANK YOU for loving us in this way!
