It is no secret that the economy is not at its peak right now. And when money and budgets are tight, it is easy to focus on money and budgets…hmmm, how will we pay for school, food, fuel, insurance, rent, phone, heat, mortgage, water, tithing, missionary support, car repairs, etc? Pretty soon, this kind of thinking becomes all-consuming, even in our relationship with God – “Lord, I know you know this, since I have begun my last 247 prayers with it, but I really need…”
I was admonished the other day when I read this:
“Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread…”
(Matt. 6:9b-11)
The first thing that Jesus prayed for was for His Father’s name to be made holy in the world. Not only was His request for our daily bread not first, it was fourth! And, graciously, a few verses later, Jesus rewords it for those of us who didn’t get it the first time:
“Seek FIRST the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things [school, food, fuel, insurance, rent, phone, heat, mortgage, water, car repairs, etc] will be added to you.” (Matt. 6:33) That’s a promise.
